DBS Update: Flying High-Or Simply Lost in Space?

Article Abstract:

The future of Direct Broadcast Satellite (DBS) is uncertain. Subscribership to the system is low and losses are high. The only DBS system in operation today, USCI, has not lived up to expectations and counts 11,000 subscribers. The company has recently cut prices. Satellite Television Corporation is planning to enter the DBS field this year with service for Washington, D.C., Baltimore and Philadelphia. There are many other and varied potential entrants to the field. In areas where it is available, TVRO is the more cost effective choice.
