Commercial off-the-shelf devices combine to save lives

Article Abstract:

The Defense Dept and MITRE Corp have developed the Tactical Automated Situation Receiver (TASR), which can alert users located anywhere in the world to incoming missile threats. The device, which grew out of the difficulty encountered in transmitting 'SCUD alerts' to soldiers during the Persian Gulf War, consists of three commercial off-the-shelf products: a global positioning system receiver, a hand-held computer, and a pocket pager.
