Article Abstract:

The market for digital video disc players (DVD) in the US has expanded more rapidly since 1998 than industry analysts had anticipated. Industry observers have revised their predictions and projected a total market for DVD players of 3 million units in 1999, an estimate which has surpassed their original forecasts by 1 million units. US distributors have reported a considerably brisk demand for DVD products since Dec 25, 1998. As a result, trade inventories have been tight since Jul 15, 1999.

DVDs take root with strong U.S. economy, rising number of titles

Article Abstract:

DVD players are selling extremely well in the US market, thanks to a robust economy and the large available supply of DVD software from major film production outfits. The increasing popularity of projection TVs, which has already reached annual sales of 1 million units in the US, has also contributed to the increasing demand for DVD players. DVD players have already surpassed the growth rate posted by CDs when they were first released in the market.
