Digital discs put pro recording power in consumer hands

Article Abstract:

The revolution in consumer-use audio recording media since 1980 has taken households from 45-rpm and 33 and 1/3-rpm vinyl record discs to eight- track tapes, then to cassette tapes and finally to optical digital discs. Optical compact discs (CDs) are much smaller but have larger storage capacities than their vinyl counterparts and are adapting to an amazing variety of formats and purposes. In 1999, MiniDiscs, recordable CDs and rewritable CDs are available for consumer use.
