Diverse Lineup, Markets Abroad Define Maxell's Battery Tactics

Article Abstract:

Hitachi Maxell Ltd of Japan intends to continue its efforts to market its lithium ion and nickel-metal hydride (Ni-MH) rechargeable batteries outside Japan. The company, which will improve its monthly production of lithium ion batteries from 3 mil to about 4 mil monthly in Aug 1998, exports half of the lithium batteries it produce. Hitachi Maxell, which exports about 80% of its Ni-MH battery production, plans to improve its monthly production capacity to 9 mil units.

Sanyo Electric Co Ltd of Japan, a worldwide distributor of nickel-cadmium, lithium ion and nickel-metal hydride rechargeable batteries, has emphasized supply stability and safety in its marketing efforts. The company has began efforts to improve foreign sales by conducting technical seminars aimed at improving technical knowledge among its staff members. The seminars have a particular focus on litium ion batteries, a line which Sanyo hopes to grow outside Japan.

Toshiba battery enhances capacity product lineup

Article Abstract:

Toshiba Battery Company Ltd of Japan intends to corner over 20% of the market for rechargeable lithium ion batteries and 30% of the Ni-MH rechargeable battery market in 1998. The company, which produces 20 million Ni-MH cells monthly, plans to differentiate its products and outdo its competitors in the market. This will be done, according to Toshiba Battery's EVP, Moriyasu Wada, by improving their products' capacity and holding price increases to a minimum.
