Fabriquer des cartes s res, ce n'est pas hors de prix !

Article Abstract:

De La Rue Card Systems wants to supply 10% of the population world-wide with its smart cards by the year 2000, through reinforcing its position in the GSM, multimedia and banking applications. To do this, the group relies on two card production plants in France and Italy (Milan). The French plant, based in Caen has a yearly output of 80mn cards and a 200 staff. In this plant, the smart cards maker is implementing a number of techniques which tend to cut the manufacturing costs and processes while increasing the card's reliability. De La Rue Card Systems, which invested FFr 30mn to develop the Chrysalide technology, expects to actually start this production in 1999 with the objective of several million cards produced, worth 10% of the total sales. Another technology implemented in the Caen plant is the 'potting' technique, which is more performant than the conventional technique but the company believes more in Chrysalide, which allows to save 50% out of the card's assembly cost with four steps instead of 7-8 with the conventional method. Besides, the production time should be cut by one week, to one week while the chip cannot be dismountable at all, neither mechanically nor chemically.
