Going for the Gold: A Merchandising Decathlon

Article Abstract:

The 1984 Summer Olympics provides an excellent opportunity for promotion of video products. The Olympics are one of the most anticipated television events ever, and suppliers are hoping for extra sales. Sanyo is the only video industry with official Olympic sponsorship. Projection television and high tech monitors also naturally lend themselves to the Olympics. Suppliers of blank tapes are also expecting enhanced sales to the many who will be unable to attend in person. Sellers of camcorders expect customers to flock to stores to buy their products before the games. Prerecorded video dealers expect sports videos to enter the lists of the most sold.

Absence of Majors Lends New Look to Show Program Exhibits

Article Abstract:

With the exception of Thorn EMI, no studio-affiliated software company exhibited their products at the 1984 CES. The CES has been losing importance in video programming to the VSDA show. One of the most aggressive companies was Vestron which promoted its made-for-home videocassette, Treasure, and its other new releases. A chart of the top selling and rental videocassettes is included.
