Article Abstract:

A study of patients at a Snoezelen centre for learning disabilities in Chesterfield, UK, has shown that sensory stimulation can help in the management of chronic pain. The centre has five rooms with various smells, lights, music and tactile experiences. The aim of the sensory environment is to offer a pleasurable sensory experience and so counter the stress and sensory deprivation experienced by patients. Preliminary results from a study of patients with chronic pain show that recorded pain levels fell considerably, while there was also a reduction in depression.
