Hydro pacts revamp operations and market strategies

Article Abstract:

Electric utilities are negotiating with environmental groups and public agencies to speed up the relicensing of their hydroelectric power plants. Any settlements, however, leave utilities with lower energy output and the cost of shouldering concessions to environmental advocates. Utilities which have gone the route include Niagara Mohawk Power Corp. and Nees Energy Inc.

Is distributed generation once again a good idea?

Article Abstract:

Distributed generation (DG) may prove to be a useful competitive tool for utilities, their unregulated subsidiaries and energy-service companies as deregulation continues. About 30% of the electricity in the US can be more effectively produced by DG within five years.
