Japan's MPT to research satellite platform for radio

Article Abstract:

Japan has allocated 450 million yen to its Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications for the development of a stratospheric radio platform for advanced telecommunications. The money will be used in launching 20 airships 20 km into the Earth's stratosphere, which will carry radio communications equipment and will serve as a relay station. The equipment will utilize unused frequency bands, including those in the extremely-high range, for rapid and large-capacity communications.

JSAT, SCC to share satellite business

Article Abstract:

Japan Satellite Systems Inc and Space Communications Corp have agreed to jointly buy and operate a communications satellite that they will launch in 2000. The satellite will occupy the 100 degrees E orbit, which is already being used by Japan Broadcasting Corp's broadcast satellite. The two companies deemed it more feasible to operate a single satellite because many satellites will operate within the same region.
