KDD begins verifying terabit transmissions

Article Abstract:

Kokusai Denshin Denwa (KDD) has started conducting verification tests for its Terabit Highway or KTH21 network for global multimedia communications. The tests are being done in Japan and between Japan and the US. The KTH21 would Internet Protocol technology, with a speed of one terabit per second for optimum economic transmissions. It would also serve as a backbone network for connecting optical fiber to rapid routers. If the tests are successful, KDD would begin a gradual migration from its existing networks to the KTH21 system.

Sony fields full DVD lineup catering to regional markets

Sony Corp has begun offering a full range of DVD players to take advantage of soaring demand. There is a Sony DVD player for every market segment, whether it be high-end, mid-range, or low-end. The company has also ventured into the portable DVD niche and incorporated features into its models to meet the needs of specific markets. The company hopes that its efforts will be rewarded with a 30% share of the market, which it expects to grow to 7.55 million units in 1999.

The computer industry's need to form a unified high-definition optical discs format, by combining the Blu-ray Disc and high-definition digital versatile discs (DVD) formats, and which can be adopted worldwide, is presented.
