DVD models, new features drive car navigation growth in Japan

Article Abstract:

Sales of car navigation equipment, a traditionally strong market in Japan where complex conventions in street-numbering makes it difficult to locate an address without the aid of a map, registered a 23.4% increase in volume to 1.32 million units in 1999. The performace, which include increases in all subcategories, is attributed to the introduction of DVD-ROM car navigators whose sales in FY 1999 alone reached a record 700,000 units.
