Riding regional rebound, Sharp revamps bases in Southeast Asia

Article Abstract:

Sharp Corp is revving up its marketing engine to capitalize on the recovery of Southeast Asian economies, said Toshihiro Noguchi, who oversees Sharp's operations in Asia and Oceania. In healthier Southeast Asian economies, the goal is to boost sales by 20% in the first half of 1999 from a year ago. In modestly recovering economies, the company aims to match year-ago sales levels. In addition to marketing improvements, the company is beefing up its production to make its Southeast Asian plants an export base.

Simplicity, image quality distinguish Toshiba's video sets

Article Abstract:

Ease of use and excellent picture quality are the two main features of VCRs produced by Toshiba. The company's VCRs are also some of the first units in the world to employ the ProDrum feature. The ProDrum places the preamplifier inside the head cylinder, which eliminates interference. Its high-end VCR models are also equipped with Digital Noise Reduction circuit, which removes transient noise by storing and comparing the images from adjacent frames.

Independence makes Toshiba video products cost-conscious

Article Abstract:

Singapore-based Toshiba Video Products Private (TVP) produces almost 80% of VCRs sold under the Toshiba brand. TVP has since closed its manufacturing facility in Singapore and has transformed itself into a supervisory company, overseeing the outsourcing of production of Toshiba VCRs in Thailand, Indonesia and China. Akira Kakiyama, president of TVP, said the company's independent status has led to the reduction of costs related to VCR production.
