Sony founded on friendship, ambition

Article Abstract:

Sony Corp's success is founded on the ambitions of two friends whose partnership was forged in World War II Japan. Masaru Ibuka and Ako Morita created the Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo, or the Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering Corp in 1946. Their first product was the G-Type tape recorder whose distribution was expanded nationally after an economic downturn in one province led to a glut in inventory. The event served as a precursor to the firm's global expansion in 1958 as the Sony Corp.

Aside from the NTSC analog TV reception, the new product will also handle all 18 ATSC DTV broadcasting formats. The Multi Image Driver (MID) circuitry will allow consumers to use picture-in-picture features to display HD signals and NTSC or VGA signals at the same time. However, according to company officials, the KW-34HD1's closed-box DTV receiver will not function with any other TV set.
