Talking 'bout my generation

Article Abstract:

A new generation of leaders in the electronics distribution business is changing the overall landscape of the industry. They are aggressively setting up partnerships with their suppliers and customers and tapping such new technologies as the Internet. The new breed is typified by Bruce Goldberg, president of All American Semiconductor; Mark Poncher, president of California Switch and Signal; Michael Rohleder, president of Insight Electronics; and Robert Rodin, president of Marshall Industries. All have witnessed the changes in the industry, among them the shift from regional to national, and from being parts-on-demand providers to parts and service providers. They have introduced such innovations as eliminating the commission-based compensation structure; acting as conduit of information from supplier to customer, to the point of offering confidential access to a distributor's intranet; and investing in the upgrade of their information systems infrastructure.

U.S. giants extend their reach worldwide

Article Abstract:

US distributors in the electronics industry expand their horizons and pursue the world market. The two most aggressive companies are Arrow Electronics Inc and Avent Inc; others are being selective in the regions they are pursuing. Fast industry growth in Asia and European re-unification are driving forces for US distributors to expand. These distributors have a good chance to prosper because of their value-added service emphasis, sophisticated distribution tracking systems and computer networks. The top 100 electronics distributors report their overseas revenue has reached $3.6 billion of a total $23.7 billion in 1995. One difficulty facing US distributors in overseas markets is the maintenance of supplier-distributor relations. Labor laws, import/export laws and purchase order requirements, which vary from country to country, also present a challenge to US distributors.
