Young Generation: Computer Literates, Music Lovers

Article Abstract:

The consumer electronics industry is going after the youth market with advertising in magazines such as Seventeen and Teen magazine. Youth of the 80s are the first computer generation. In a survey for Seventeen magazine, YV Research reported that half of the teen girls surveyed owned a household game console and 24.6 percent considered themselves heavy game users. The teenage girl market has always been interested in music. TV viewership decreases as youth goes from young teens to college age. In a survey for Boy's Life it was reported that 33.4 percent of subscribers owned a home computer. College students have an average of $2,700 in discretionary income per year.

Though readers of men's magazines have the buying power, they often choose mid-priced equipment. In Playboy Magazine, consumer electronics advertising has moved from fourth to third place. A major factor in the change in male buying habits is the rise of video and computer equipment from specialty to mass market items.
