A retrospective of R*: a distributed database management system

Article Abstract:

R* is a research prototype distributed database management system (DBMS) which allows transparent access to local and remote relational data. The R* project, which required about six years to implement, was initiated at the IBM San Jose Research Laboratory. Key ideas which guided its design and implementation include: distribution transparency; site autonomy; good performance for local and multi-site operations; support for multiple sites within a system; and virtual circuit monitoring at the network transport level. The top-down breadth-first approach to the implementation helped make the problems of multi-site joins and of complex distributed execution patterns easier to consider. Since R* is a research prototype with no formal product development and support, there is little experience with its actual use. Several complex aspects of distributed database management, such as support for replicated or partitioned tables, have not yet been addressed.

Some experiences with a distributed database testbed system

Article Abstract:

The distributed database testbed system (DDTS) was developed at the Honeywell Computer Science Center. It automates the evaluation of alternative methods and algorithms for managing data stored in different databases on different machines. The DDTS does this for a request by carrying out five tasks: determining which computers have the needed data; formulating queries to execute on the needed computers; transferring results to a single computer; combining and merging the results; and extracting the answer from the combined results. The DDTS architecture supports the needs of organizations with databases that are both shared and tightly coupled. For databases which are not tightly coupled, a federated database management system with information architecture different from, and system architecture similar to, those of the DDTS may be used.
