Aircraft interface with the future ATC system

Article Abstract:

The digital Flight Management Systems (FMSs) in many modern commercial aircraft integrate flight planning, precision navigation, guidance, control and display systems. By optimizing the route the aircraft flies, FMS supports increased air traffic control (ATC) system capacity and operating efficiency, but reliance on single-file flight along fixed routes and tactical control using radar position data has limited FMS effectiveness. Planned enhancements to the National Airspace System (NAS) will bring ATC system handling capabilities up to the FMS level. The total transportation system can be enhanced to a much higher degree by integration of ground and airborne tasks to optimize more recent improvements to airborne navigation systems that go beyond FMS. The NAS plan must consider optimization of current and future ATC technologies.

Applicability of an augmented GPS for navigation in the National Airspace System

Article Abstract:

The US Department of Defense began the Global Positioning System (GPS) in 1973 as a worldwide military air navigation system able to provide accurate three-dimensional position, velocity and time information to authorized P-code users. The Federal Aviation Administration is studying the use of satellite-based air traffic control systems, and the decline in cost of GPS receivers for many applications may eventually allow GPS to compete with VOR/DME avionics equipment. Questions remain, however, concerning satellite failure, signal integrity and selective availability. An augmented GPS system is described that meets National Airspace System (NAS) navigation requirements and that is not susceptible to satellite failure, signal integrity problems and selective availability.
