Lidar sensing of aerosols and clouds in the troposphere and stratosphere

Article Abstract:

Lidar is a powerful tool for remote sensing of aerosols and clouds in the upper atmosphere. Recent advances in development and applications have enhanced its potential. Computerization has improved methods of signal processing and lidar is now being integrated with other sensors for more comprehensive studies. Detection and mapping of tropospheric aerosol particles, retrieval of aerosol parameters, and sensing of clouds in the troposphere and stratosphere are important applications of lidar in atmospheric science. Limitations in detector performance, spectral properties, and resistance to interference hinder practical application of lidar but are being countered by rapid technological evolution.

Coherent Doppler lidar for measurements of wind fields

Article Abstract:

Coherent Doppler lidar is a powerful tool for remote measurements of atmospheric wind fields. It uses signal-processing techniques similar to those used with Doppler radar after downconversion, but with significant differences in the types of pulses used. Doppler lidar measures the Doppler shift from a signal pulse instead of a sequence of pulses. Its diodes are perfect square-law devices while those used in radar are mixed via a linear response. One application of a coherent Doppler-lidar system is the ability to map wind fields over selected regions of the lower atmosphere. NASA plans to launch an earth-orbiting Doppler lidar apparatus in the late 1990s.
