Eddy currents: theory and application

Article Abstract:

Eddy currents are distributed currents in a voltage-induced body with magnetic or non-magnetic materials. They produce heat, a magnetic reaction field and forces caused by the interaction of the inducing and the induced field. These manifestations show that eddy currents may exist in all electromagnetic machines. Eddy currents may be harmful or beneficial depending on the nature of the machine that they inhabit. The nature and effects of eddy currents have to be analyzed to judge whether their existence within electromagnetic machines should be supported or inhibited. Eddy currents can be used for power or force generation and conversion and for information processing. They can be analyzed via analytical or mathematical methods. Mathematical analysis is the best approach since it provides a more general view of eddy currents.

Application of a class of generalized boundary conditions to scattering by a metal-backed dielectric half-plane

Article Abstract:

A generalized version of GD Maliuzhinets' method for measuring surface waves on a wedge is combined with additional constraints in order to determine the electromagnetic scattering from a dielectrically coated, perfectly conducting metal half-plane. Higher-order boundary conditions are used to simulate the dielectric, enabling the treatment of the object as a infinitesimally thin half-plane. Second-order boundary conditions for scattering from the low-contrast and high-contrast dielectric are analyzed by the modified Maliuzhinets' method. Details of the development, underlying equations, and applications of the methodology are described.

Langmuir on the Theory and Application of the Vacuum Tube

Article Abstract:

The mathematical theory of space charge in high-vacuum electronic tubes is studied. Vacuum tubes were once used in all types of communication systems. Applications of vacuum tubes in radio telegraphy and telephony are analyzed. A discussion on the theory of vacuum tubes is included. Effect of space charge on the thermionic currents is graphed.
