Ernst Weber: bridger of cultures

Article Abstract:

Ernst Weber was born in 1901 in Vienna, Austria. He earned doctorates in physics and electrical engineering before moving to the US in 1930 to teach and perform research at the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn, later known as Polytechnic University. Weber developed an outstanding graduate program at the university and was responsible for many notable contributions to microwave research. He became the president of Polytechnic in 1957 and was the first president of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). He worked for the National Research Council for nine years following his retirement from Polytechnic in 1969. Weber was known for building bridges between cultures, particularly between European and American electrical engineering, industry and academia, engineering and physics, and between the American Institute of Electrical Engineers and the Institute of Radio Engineers. He has built a bridge to the past through his longevity and a bridge to the future through his students and the hundreds of others that are deeply influenced by him.

Back to the basics

Article Abstract:

The 1st Force Reconnaissance Company performed reconnaissance and surveillance tasks successfully in Operation Iraqi Freedom mainly due to the return to the grassroots of ground reconnaissance in the deep battle and the integration into I MEF (Marine Expeditionary Force) planning and intelligence processes and subsequent coordination with the MEF aviation combat element. The experience gained emphasizes the importance of ground reconnaissance and associated command and control in the future of force reconnaissance and Marine Corps special operations.
