Linear controller design: limits of performance via convex optimization

Article Abstract:

The fundamental problem in the analysis and design of linear control systems, the determination of a control law that meets the design specifications for a particular system and control configuration, can be solved through the simultaneous consideration of all closed-loop transfer functions (transfer matrix H) necessary to evaluate a controller. A recent theoretical result for the parameterization of achievable closed-loop transfer matrices is combined with numerical convex optimization techniques to find solutions for the design specifications of a restricted set of linear and time-invariant (LTI) control systems. An important aspect of the design specification is that the closed-loop system should be stable. A nondifferentiable convex program offers a numerical solution when specifications are all closed-loop convex. Alternative LTI controller design approaches are presented for comparison.

Simon Simple discovers a niche

Article Abstract:

A hypothetical situation is presented about running a startup engineering firm. An engineer named Simon Simple starts an engineering consulting and specialty technical report preparation firm called Simple Services Inc (SSI) with a $100,000 loan to be repaid with interest from a relative. He is able to win a contract from a manufacturer. However, Simon encounters difficulties with his cash flow. An analysis of his accounting methods will furnish a number of lessons on understanding the financial aspects of a start-up engineering consulting firm.
