Major components of a complete text reading system

Article Abstract:

The document image processes used in a newly developed text reading system are examined. The system consists of document analysis, document understanding and character segmentation/recognition. The document analysis component extracts lines of text from a page for recognition; it finds document constituents such as photographs, text lines and graphics, and the geometric structure is obtained as a hierarchy of items on the page for modeling relationships of objects. The document understanding component extracts logical relationships between the constituents of the document, with the geometric structure of a document represented by a tree; the logical structure of the document is represented by another tree. The character segmentation/recognition component recognizes characters extracted from a text line.

The European data relay system: present concept and future evolution

Article Abstract:

The European decision to develop the In-Orbit Infrastructure (IOI) has brought about the need for a European data relay system (DRS). The goal of the DRS is to provide users with advantages in: increased coverage area; reduction or elimination of need for on-board data storage; reduced time delay between transmission of data from the user spacecraft and its reception on the ground; minimization of second data distribution problems on the ground; more flexibility in scheduling operations; and lower costs. The design of the DRS is under development.
