Message-Handling Systems and Protocols

Article Abstract:

As the market for personal, business, and workstation computers grows, message-handling systems providing store-and-forward electronic mail services will be needed. A universal Message- Handling System will be developed based on the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model. The CCITT has adopted such a model. the message system consists of originators and recipients with functions associated with the user being the User Agent and the Message Transfer Agent responsible for transferring messages. The Message Transfer Layer provides services for transferring messages and for naming originators and recipients. The Interpersonal Messaging service builds on the Message Transfer Service. Diagrams illustrate message handling protocol and configurations while tables list message transfer services and interpersonal managing service elements.

Services, architectures, and protocols for space data systems

Article Abstract:

Next generation space data systems will implement international standards-based techniques for data handling, classification and transmission. Those techniques are being developed by the International Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS) consortium. Space data systems are designed to provide the bidirectional exchange of information between ground-based users and the spacecraft's on-board equipment, and to offer facilities for the processing, storage, archiving and retrieval of that information. The CCSDS Principal Network system currently under development is designed to offer both ground-based and onboard users standardized services for the transfer, processing and storage of the information. Specifications and protocols for the system are discussed.
