Space station communications and tracking system

Article Abstract:

The Space Station communication and tracking (C&T) system will be the central node in the main end-to-end communications network which will furnish communications between on board, ground station, and co-orbiting systems. Links will also be established between support vehicles, extra-vehicular astronauts, orbital maneuvering vehicles, and the mobile servicing center (MSC). The Tracking and Data Relay Satellite (TDRS) System will handle space-to-ground communications, with possible assistance from the European Space Agency and-or Japanese National Space Development Agency satellites. The distributed system, including hardware and software, will be maintained by a central control and monitoring system. An in-depth description of the C&T is presented, with a focus on its innovative aspects, development, and testing.

Space Shuttle communications and tracking system

Article Abstract:

The communications and tracking (C&T) system developed for the Space Shuttle incorporates solutions to many technological challenges. Orbiter-to-ground communications are accomplished with the Tracking Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) and a digital communication system in the orbiter. Low-gain, flush-mounted antennas on the orbiter necessitate the utilization of techniques such as: source encoding; data compression; channel coding; and phase-shift keying modulation. Other advanced methodologies used include spread-spectrum signaling, unbalanced quadriphase modulation, and encryption. The C&T interfaces with NASA and US Air Force tracking and control facilities.
