Control aspects of intraaortic balloon pumping: an overview

Article Abstract:

Closed-loop control algorithms are desirable for optimal automatic control of implanted cardiac assist devices, such as the intraaortic balloon pump (IABP) and other left ventricular assist devices (LVADs). There are a variety of internal or external inline or bypass cardiac assist devices providing temporary or ongoing pumping support to a failing heart. The timing of their operation, such as the inflation and deflation of the inline IABP, is vital to the successful support of heart functioning. This is particularly important in LVADs that are designed to be permanently implanted. Consequently, sophisticated microprocessor-based control systems and optimization algorithms are developed to synchronize the assist device with the natural heart and other control variables.

Development of an automatic implanted drug infusion system for the management of cardiac arrhythmias

Article Abstract:

A prototype implanted system is developed for the automatic detection of the onset of paroxysmal cardiac arrhythmias and infusion of a pharmacokinetically based antiarrhythmic drug. The system delivers the drug until the arrhythmia is controlled, then discontinues delivery until the next incident. The arrhythmia-sensing system includes sensing electrodes, a pacemaker, and software for evaluation of signals for arrhythmic conditions. The drug delivery system is a two-compartment pharmacokinetic infusion system that rapidly achieves correct plasma levels and maintains them as long as needed. Experimental results demonstrate the viability of the prototype implanted system. Details of the detection and delivery systems and their testing are described.
