Anatomy of a versatile page reader

Article Abstract:

The design of an experimental printed-page reader that exhibits a high degree of adaptability to various languages is described. The effects of sources of variation, such as symbol sets, typefaces and linguistic contexts, are isolated within independent engineering subsystems, allowing for the construction of classifiers for arbitrary combinations of symbols, imaging defects, sizes and typefaces. Automatic learning from examples and generalized table-driven methods are utilized over algorithm's language-specific rules. Language dependency is avoided entirely in some cases, while linguistic context is exploited through data-directed filtering algorithms in a modular and uniform manner.

The new AP101S general-purpose computer (GPC) for the Space Shuttle

Article Abstract:

The General Purpose Computer (GPC) is the main data processing computer on the Space Shuttle, controlling and monitoring vehicle functions. The capabilities of the current AP101B GPC are being surpassed by the shuttle's expanding requirements. The AP101S is an upgraded system that has evolved from line of pipeline processors, having the flexibility to adapt to future shuttle requirements. The development of the AP101S GPC is discussed, including the aspects of preliminary design, methodology, characteristics, and test phase of the program.
