The evolving intelligent interexchange network -- an SS7 perspective

Article Abstract:

The role of Signaling System 7 (SS7) in the evolution of interexchange carrier services is discussed. SS7's importance in evolving the necessary intelligent network for supporting these services is also addressed. The use of the out-of-band Integrated-Services Digital Network (ISDN) messaging channel (D-channel) for extending SS7 network signaling to customer networks is described. The interworking of interexchange SS7 with domestic local exchange carriers and foreign administrations is critical for ubiquitous support of ISDN, CLASS and future services. US Sprints' experience with the evolution of intelligent networks is discussed. A glossary of terms is provided.

Signaling System No. 7, IS-41 and cellular telephony networking

Article Abstract:

The common channel Signaling System No. 7 (SS7) has matured in two directions over the last five years. The development of CCITT Signaling System No. 7 (C7) has grown outside the US because of the need for modern call completion features in national telephone networks. SS7 evolved in the US due to the demand for fast, reliable database services and the need for custom calling (CLASS) features for Local Exchange Carrier (LEC) networks. The demand for custom network solutions will increase in the 1990s. This will be especially true in the cellular telephony industry. The merging of the call delivery and database services of both SS7 and C7 are discussed.
