A Computer Simulation of Launch Procedures for a Squadron of Minuteman II ICBMs

Article Abstract:

A model of Minuteman II ICBMs' launching is presented, focusing on the command procedures. Hypothesizing damage to a Launch Control Center (LCC), the model examines how such damage affects the launch command process and the likelihood of error, given the launch rules and procedures. Within the model are sub-models of three basic areas: launch facilities (LFs), LCCs, and the Airborne Launch Control Center (ALCC). The model does not exactly replicate conditions. It is felt that it is not necessary for the model to be useful in predicting a range of outcomes. Experience with the model has so far indicated that more complex analysis, factorial analysis, is required to interpret the outcomes and that simplifying decision rules in the model's design may have yielded inadequate results. A photograph of the author, flow charts of the first phases of the launch sequence and the simulation process, diagrams of the models structure and vote process for launch, and a table of simulation results are included.

Sixteenth Annual Simulation Symposium

Article Abstract:

The Society for Computer Simulation conducted a one-day workshop on continuous simulation problems. Six presentations were given. The covered topics included using microprocessors for off loading of certain simulation tasks being run on a large computer, simulating satellite communications, new methods for real-time simulation, and high speed-algebra software.

Eighteenth Annual Simulation Symposium

Article Abstract:

Tampa, Florida hosted the Eighteenth Annual Simulation Symposium March 13-15, 1985. The symposium was the highlight of Simulation Week. Fifteen presentations were made; the $500 award for best paper went to Dr. Emily Roth and Alan Rutan for 'A Relaxation Time Approach for Reducing Initialization Bias in Simulation.'
