A little-known chemical bids for new roles

Article Abstract:

Asahi Chemical Industry has developed a new process for synthesizing beta- thujaplicin (4-isopropyl tropolone). The novel technique produces 1- isopropylcyclopentadiene (1-iPrCPD) by reacting cyclopentadienyl metal (CPD-metal) with isopropylbromide in an aprotic polar solvent. The CPD- metal is dissolved and the resultant 5-iPrCPD is further converted to 1- iPrCPD at O to 30 degrees C. It is then reacted with dichloroacetic acid chloride from -10 to 10 degrees C which generates ketene adduct. The beta- thujaplicin is produced when the ketene adduct is decomposed at 50 to 140 degrees C in a solvent mixture.

Silica membranes improve pervaporation system capability

Article Abstract:

Sulzer Chemtech Membrane Systems has won the rights to manufacture silica pervaporation membranes developed by the Netherlands Energy Research Foundation. The silica membranes would complement Sulzer's existing polymeric membrane products, which can only tolerate temperatures up to 120 degrees C. On the other hand, the silica membranes can be used at higher temperatures, with greater flux rate and overall performance. Sulzer plans to offer the more the more expensive silica membranes at a price comparable with polymeric membranes.
