A numbered approach to deciphering the urban canvas

Article Abstract:

The 'Painting by Numbers' guide shows cities how to develop practical policies for achieving sustainability, and is part of BT's National Environment City programme. It is based on extensive work by the Wildlife Trusts, and shows how sustainability policies have been developed in the demonstration cities of Leeds, Middlesbrough, Leicester and Peterborough. It emphasises that the city must be taken as a whole and that the public, private and voluntary sectors must work together.

Vocies of revivalism?

Article Abstract:

A debate at the Royal Society of Arts symposium held in London, England, during February 1994 suggests that banning cars from British town centres may be contributing to their decline. The assumption that pedestrianised town centres are more economically viable than those with vehicles is being questioned by several professionals who suggest that shoppers will not abandon their cars unless a reliable and convenient public transport service is provided.
