A prototype implementation of GPSS in SAS (technical)

Article Abstract:

This paper describes a program written in the SAS language which allows constructing a simulation with a subset of the GPSS language. A discrete event model is encoded and then run in the SAS environment. The advantage of this approach is the ability to use the statistical and graphics procedures in SAS for monitoring of the simulation during the run and-or for post-simulation analysis. Examples of the interaction of the GPSS blocks and the SAS procedures are provided. (Reprinted by permission of the publisher.)

UK women lead the way on interdisciplinary resarch

Article Abstract:

More women scientists do interdisciplinary research than men in the UK, according to a survey commissioned by several UK higher education funding bodies. However in engineering, women concentrate on narrow disciplinary work. The survey also shows that more women than men are on short-term contracts and in the academic year 1996-97 just 12% of all professorships were held by women.
