A security roundtable

Article Abstract:

Computer system experts from Hamburg, Germany; Australia, Washington, D.C.; Menlo Park, CA; and Santa Monica, CA gathered through an electronic mail system to discuss computer security issues in a colloquy by electronic mail. Klaus Brunnstein, William Caelli, Lance J. Hoffman, Peter G. Neumann, Marc Rotenburg, and Willis H. Ware discuss the relation of electronic information systems to modern life. Klaus Brunstein of the Virus Test Center at the Univ of Hamburg contends software designers have led us into the dark ages of this technology due to their lack of reasonable analysis on the risks of software implementations. Peter Neumann of the SRI Computer Science Laboratory sees dangers more serious than those implied by computer and communications security problems; system behavior is characteristically unpredictable and undependable, with real-time control, guaranteed performance, human safety and application survivability being interdependent and typically poorly managed.

Upgrading the internet

Article Abstract:

Stalwarts in networking agree that the Internet will probably expand beyond computers into global information infrastructure. Accordingly, its influence must extend beyond computers to television sets, wireless devices, and other everyday electronic items. In this context, a new Internet protocol, IPv6, has been developed. IPv6 is designed to rum well on high-performance networks, yet be efficient for wireless and other low-bandwidth networks. It also presents benefits for multimedia and enhances security.
