A semi-open decomposition approach for an open queueing network in a general configuration with a kanban blocking mechanism

Article Abstract:

An open queueing network based on a semi-open decomposition model with a kanban blocking mechanism is described. The proposed network consists of multiple stations such as workstations, an entrance station, a common station and an exit station arranged in a general configuration. Each workstation is decomposed as a semi-open queueing network using the semi-open decomposition technique, while an algorithm is utilized to obtain the blocking probabilities for jobs that are routed to the workstations.

Limited flexibility in cellular manufacturing systems: a simulation study

Article Abstract:

The impact of demand variability and resource dependability on the performance of cellular manufacturing systems (CMS) is investigated. CMS configurations that optimize performance are determined using routing flexibility, whose costs and benefits are analyzed in simulation experiments. It is shown that the routing flexibility is effective in increasing productivity as the system uncertainty increases, with the limited flexibility configuration for the CMS proving particularly beneficial.

Approximation approach for the performance analysis of production lines under a kanban discipline

Article Abstract:

A mathematical model is proposed for evaluating the effect of major system parameters on the performance of a just-in-time (JIT) production system. The model, which is based on the queueing theory and Markovian assumptions, is used to analyze the peformance of kanban controlled line in the steady state condition. Results indicate that the model is a powerful performance analysis tool for evaluating the reliability of JIT manufacturing systems.
