Aerospace and military

Article Abstract:

Looking back at the aerospace and military world in 1998 and making predictions for 1999 brings up new smart weapons, including palm-sized, unmanned aircraft, full-sized ones, and radio-frequency (RF) beacons that can be dormant behind enemy lines until needed. New rifles and mines are also being given brains of their own. Wide-area munitions (WAMs) from Textron Systems are going to be doing what mines have done. Commercial charge-coupled device (CCD) video-camera miniaturization has advanced greatly, and that contributed to development of micro air vehicles (MAVs). Companies discussed include Alliant Techsystems, AeroVironment, Heckler & Koch, KE Ammunition Dynamit Nobel, Lockheed Martin's Sanders, AAI, Bell Helicopter Textron, General Electric, and Sikorsky Aircraft.

The digital backlot

Article Abstract:

The special effects of modern motion pictures are the result of basic research in computer software graphics, hardware and developments in high-bandwidth networks. Digital technologies, including resolution, scanning pictures through computers and image distortion are used to create these effects. Use of special effects in modern movies increases production costs. The movie industry is feeding an already billion-dollar-a-year industry, leading computer companies to compete for its business.
