An earthing solution in the pipeline

Article Abstract:

The majority of new domestic water service installations were, until recently, supplied up to the stopcock using iron pipe. Main bonding would be applied as metallic parts are considered to be extraneous-conductive-parts. However there are questions as to whether plastic piping should be bonded, or even classified as an extraneous conductive part. This would require assessment involving a visual inspection and measuring the insulation resistance using an insulation tester.

Safety first

Article Abstract:

The relationship between the main contractor and electrical contractors is central to the issue of installation safety. Poor communications between contractors can compromise the functionality of the electrical system and the user will not enjoy its full potential. Points to consider when installing new systems should include good design of electrical installations, direct contact with clients, and the use of trained operatives to provide high standards of installation.

An inspector calls

Article Abstract:

A draft scheme for the electrical industry to be published in January 2000 requires electrical contracting firms to be assessed by a qualified inspector. The scheme will allow contractors to be assessed to common standards, with approval bodies undertaking technical assessments required to be accredited by UKAS. The main standard against which firms will be accredited is likely to be EN 45011.
