Battling for local phone customers

Article Abstract:

AT&T has purchased TCI, the cable giant, and plans to use broadband cable for offering local phone service, and it has entered a venture with Time Warner to offer cable telecoms services. The Telecommunications Act of 1996 provided for local service companies to enter the long-distance market and for long-distance companies to be in the local market, and it set up a kind of free-for-all that would also involve television markets. Some predict AT&T will eliminate all competitors when it offers integrated services with cable partners. The case for cable modems is that strong. As for DSL and its incremental aspects, it seems to be oversold to a degree. Customers are influenced by local conditions and their feelings about reputations of local companies they have had service from in the past. No one knows yet what will happen or when because the public is very unpredictable. The regional Bell operating companies are resisting opening networks to competitors and challenging the powers given the Federal Communications Commission.
