Biosensors enliven the science of detection; enzymatic devices provide a highly specific and speedy way to measure compounds

Article Abstract:

Biosensors, which could measure samples with such accuracy and sensitivity at a fast rate, were created by researchers by a combination of biology and electronics. The best known example of this sensing device is the blood glucose monitors, which are used by diabetic people. Theoretically, the enzymatic equipment can extract molecules of target compounds from smaller concentrations. The device has applications in fields as diverse as medicine, industry, military and environmental monitoring. While spectacular results have yet to emanate from biosensor research, scientists will continue to study them for use in exacting areas.

Regulating bioengineered food

Article Abstract:

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) plans to propose a rule mandating developers of bioengineered products to get a pre-market approval for new products. The proposal is supported by the Biotechnology Industry Organization. The proposal also covers the issuance of voluntary labeling guidelines for producers of food that contain bioengineered ingredients. The existing practice is for bioengineered foods developers to voluntarily consult with FDA prior to marketing their products.

Budgeting for cleanroom spaces

Article Abstract:

Chemical engineers should be involved in the early process of the design and construction of a chemical facility to avoid budget problems. The budgeting process is made up of five steps, namely, understanding project objectives, identifying functional areas, establishing area requirements, establishing systems requirements and determining the fan horsepower. A typical pre-construction cost model is presented.
