Biotech foods: a closed and reopened case

Article Abstract:

No evidence that foods from biotech crops on the market are unsafe exists according to representatives of Dow AgroSciences LLC, who advocate greater understanding of risk assessment and detail the analytical-deliberative process used in their company. Pros and cons on biotechnology foods, those that are genetically modified or created using genetic engineering, continue to be of interest from points of view in science and politics and from the emotional standpoint in the public. The foods are produced by modern recombinant DNA technology and were first commercially introduced in the US in 1995. They offer financial and management advantages to farmers and have been increasingly popular with them, about 70 mil acres being planted in 1999. Topics include implementation of the holistic approach to understanding risk, new approaches to risk analysis, and data behind the products. Misconceptions and concerns are listed with counterarguments. US regulations are listed.

The promise and pitfalls of human testing

Article Abstract:

Use of human subjects in testing may make pesticides safer or may add to profits for industry. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is considering recommendations as it designs its final policy on human testing and convened a joint panel of the Scientific Advisory Board and scientific Advisory Panel in late 1998. The panel is to prepare a set of recommendations on the proper role of human studies in regulatory decision making, risks and benefits of human testing for subjects and society, and appropriate ethical standards for human experiments. It is to consider Common Rule and the Declaration of Helsinki by the World Medical Association. Apparently difficulty in getting panel members to agree on the issues exists. Patients given a neurotoxic insecticide orally in the United Kingdom by Medeval Laboratories on behalf of the Amvac Chemical (California) are discussed as are tests using laboratory animals.
