Article Abstract:

The recent introduction of analysis software based on boundary element analysis (BEA) allows easy analysis of a design early on in the design process. The new software will allow designers to model heat flow through electronic components, for example. Desktop Engineering's new BEA-based analysis software package is called 'BEASY', while Merit Computer Solutions is marketing the US-developed 'CADKEY Analysis' package in the UK. BEA allows quick modification and reanalysis of products, and is more accurate in calculations than the two-step finite element analsysis (FEA) software. However, BEA cannot be used to analyse models involving buckling, plasticity or crack propagation, as it works in the elastic phase. BEA is thought to be able to solve over 90% of current analysis tasks, and almost 100% of the usual problems experienced in initial design work.
