CFI: toward a broad, standard framework

Article Abstract:

The CAD Framework Initiative (CFI) is working to develop a standard framework specification that would allow tools from various electronic design automation (EDA) vendors work together seamlessly. The organization was formed in 1988 due to complaints about excessive EDA engineering overhead created by the incompatibilities between vendors' products and users' needs. The overhead continues to have a profound effect on the cost, quality and time to market of many EDA products. According to CFI, a framework is a 'set of procedural interfaces to a set of common system services,' rather than a monolithic structure of executable code. The organization's activities are carried out by two technical subcommittees and about 25 working groups. CFI is now entering a new phase during which it intends to deliver strong commercial guidelines for framework development.

Specifying a human-machine interface

Article Abstract:

Rapid 1.0, from Emultek Ltd is an $800 (US) cost-effective, well implemented, comprehensive software package for system designers. The Microsoft Windows based package features a set of object classes such as indicator lamps, push buttons, text display, and switches. Four main modules comprise the integrated environment: object editor, logic editor, logic chart and prototyper. Once the object is defined for the application, the designer can use the logic editor for specification of the application logic structure and behavior. Rapid may be slow at starting up, reading and saving data to the hard disk. The user interface is intuitive and well designed, and the package has the quality otherwise associated with the computational power available from a workstation environment.
