Article Abstract:

The planned international fieldbus standard, IEC 61158, is scheduled for completion at the end of 1999. This standard is intended to guarantee enhanced interoperability between various protocols. Some observers believe that IEC 61158 was misguided in overlooking proven fieldbus protocols such as Profibus, ASI and DeviceNet. However, it is now intended to unite eight leading fieldbus protocols under IEC 61158.
