Communications

Article Abstract:

Communication remains one of the most rapidly changing technologies in the age of information with advances on several fronts in the last year. Mobile-satellite communications spectrum has expanded, and land mobile-satellite systems received worldwide radio frequency allocation for the first time. Installation continued in 1987 of long-distance optical-fiber trunk circuits, and AT & T has begun selling fiber-ready distribution cable. A truly open international communications network became more of a reality in 1987, too. In another development, the French Videotex system has been judged a success, and a model for others to follow. Also the High-Definition TV (HDTV) debate has been renewed in Europe.

Communications

Article Abstract:

ISDN came closer to reality in 1986, as such systems were field tested by some US telephone companies and saw expanded usage in France and the UK. Japanese companies worked on such components for coherent optical communications systems as a tunable monolithic semiconductor laser diode and an optical amplifier. Companies from nine nations agreed to construct two fiber-optic submarine cable systems to span the Pacific Ocean during the year, and installation of the light trans-Atlantic cable continues.

Communications

Article Abstract:

New and sophisticated forms of communications technology are expected to be unveiled by the communications industry in 1996. These technologies, which include cable television-based and wireless Internet services, asynchronous transfer mode concepts and two-way beeping and television services over power and telephone lines, are likely to lead to the development of new telecommunications infrastructures and the implementation of new regulations.
