Computer software solves many problems

Article Abstract:

The Engineering Sciences Data Unit (ESDU) has launched a range of CD-ROMs to assist engineers in finding graphs and formulae which will improve calculation accuracy. Mitutoyo has introduced co-ordinate measuring machine software based on Controlled Open System for Modular Operation Support, and Matra is offering Euclid Analyst which supports closed loop validation on a CAD model. Strucom is launching ANSYS/ProFEA combined with Pro/Engineer, which was used by a US toy maker, to streamline material usage.

The price is right

Article Abstract:

The increasing use of NT by CAD designers means that workstations are having to become less expensive. Compaq is one manufacturer aiming to sell affordable 3D workstations, with its AP200 machines costing less than 2,000 pounds sterling and offering a cost-effective solution for plastic injection toolmakers and others forced to use the same 3D CAD programs as their aerospace and automotive customers. Other suppliers offering similar workstations include Hewlett-Packard, IBM and Silicon Graphics.

Mastering the information explosion

Article Abstract:

Improved data management systems are necessary to cope with stored engineering information. Design engineers spend about 40% of their time on information searching. Advanced electronic catalogues may provide a solution. Neural networks may facilitate picture scanning. Machine Aided Indexing allows contextual word searching of texts. French company COROM has developed a package for constructing off-line databases from on-line sources in particular subject areas.
