Computing EM fields

Article Abstract:

The finite-element method (FEM) represents an important step forward in the analysis of power system design and electromagnetic (EM) fields. The type of field employed by an EM determines the way in which the EM device is optimized. The designer must determine, as accurately as possible, the location of a maximum electric field strength with respect to its geometry. The conductors must then be shaped so that the maximum field strength is less than the critical level of dielectric breakdown. The most common FEM used to simulate high-frequency device EM fields is similar to that used for low-frequency-device field calculations, although there are other methods, such as boundary element, boundary integral moments, finite differences and time-domain methods. Designers must consider whether a two- or three-dimensional emphasis is feasible. The two-dimensional approach may be better for simulating complicated phenomena, will take less time and is more comprehensive, but the user must be more knowledgable than users of the three-dimensional approach. A directory of vendors and products is presented.

Multichip routing and placement

Article Abstract:

Vendors are developing new ways to design interconnecting networks for thin-film multichip modules (MCM). Requirements for MCM designs include one-layer, one-direction rules; evenly distributed wiring; arbitrary-angle routing; and variable-width traces and spacing on a per-net basis. Racal-Redac Ltd offers its fully integrated, dedicated MCM Design Suite, which handles the design of high-speed and high-density MCMs. The Prance Warp router can adapt or distort, or warp, an existing orthogonal grid to optimize available free channels, which satisfies off-grid-feature requirements. Cooper and Chyan Technology Inc develops a gridless routing approach, called shape-based routing, which decomposes information into an array of points. A directory of vendors and products is presented.
