DMIS application patent raises questions among CMM OEMs, software firms, and users

Article Abstract:

Concern over a patent issued to Fanamation Inc covering the use of dimensional measuring interface specification (DMIS) as a native language is examined; makers of coordinate measuring machines and software firms that offer the DMIS option are questioning if the validity of the patent can be maintained if challenged, if the patent discourages use of DMIS, if use of a national standard can be patented and if the patent's impact affects new DMIS under development. Fanamation says it does not want to discourage the use or further development of DMIS and claims any appropriate royalties would be nominal. The DMIS Users Group is expected to examine the issue at its next meeting in mid-May.

The ISO 9000 edge

Article Abstract:

A large number of industrial nations have adopted ISO 9000 standards for products and services. It is hoped that all the member nations in the EC will follow suit, setting common standards for goods and services in more countries worldwide. Two expositions will seek to promote ISO 9000 standards and will feature discussions with leaders in the field of standards such as the Secretary General of the International Organization for Standardization.
