DOE sets vision for lighting technology

Article Abstract:

The US Dept of Energy has released the 'Vision 2020 Lighting Technology Roadmap' as a guide for the path that lighting technology and innovation would have to take through 2020. The roadmap is a form of collaboration between industry and government to develop a shared vision and action plan for the future, according to Dennis Clough of Gary Gordon Lighting, who participated in the workshops that led to the creation of the roadmap. The report is now available at the department's Web site, www.eren.doe.gov/buildings/vision2020.

Albanese Confectionery of Merrilville, IN, opted for a vertical-tube, low- water-content boiler design when it decided to add gummy bears to its product offerings. The company picked the boiler design after a thorough examination of the available alternatives and in consideration of the safety of over 40 workers at its plant. Albanese's boiler is designed to immediately dissipate steam energy once it is formed, a design aimed at preventing the occurrence of boiler explosions.

Sage Realty Corp is utilizing a Windows-based interface to predict possible problems in building operating systems in commercial buildings. The technology has been long used in industrial facilities to record vibrations in rotating equipment by measuring ball bearings breakdown. The device, which allows a maximum of 12,800 lines standard FFT and frequency of between 0.18 hz to 75.3 khz, can identify alarm points indicating potential breakdowns.
