Data visualization: the end of the rainbow
Article Abstract:
Sophisticated data visualization does not simply map data to the spectrum, but takes into account how the visual system processes information, the nature of the data, and how the data will be used. What is fundamentally important is how to use color to show characteristics of interest in a dataset. A software package called Pravda (perceptual rule-based architecture for visualizing data accurately), developed by IBM, incorporates results of perceptual research. The software is not yet available commercially but is being used in various projects.
