Defense R&D: bucking the trend

Article Abstract:

Budget cuts in military sectors have motivated many aerospace and defense industry companies to search for nondefense applications for technology originally developed for military use. Radar, gallium arsenide semiconductors and satellite communications may have commercial business value, according to some aerospace and defense industry executives. Critical technologies in the US presently are photonics, signal processing and software. Artificial intelligence work in the areas of command and control, battlefield vehicles, ships and aircraft is expected to continue. Many defense contractors intend to keep major federal contracts, although the applications may change. Some defense firms plan to expand their presence in commercial markets.

Super charged

Article Abstract:

Ness Cap Co. of South Korea is offering capacitors performing better than others in terms of energy and power density. The ultra capacities would cut the cost of ultra capacitors, find new markets as they are superior to batteries in many respects and also be used increasingly in hybrid-electric and fuel cell cars.
