Cable slouches toward open access

Article Abstract:

Open access to cable systems by Internet service providers (ISP) will not be easy to achieve. For example, it is not clear how a cable company should proceedin the technical matter of dividing up a fixed amount of information-carrying capacity among many ISPs. Questions involving fairness versus efficiency arise, and it is not clear how to ensure that a cable provider does not favor a company. Industry observers say it could be several years before cable systems accommodating multiple ISPs become commonplace.

Cable: It's not just for TV

Article Abstract:

Cable systems can deliver 30 MBps data and can carry telephone and TV traffic. Users wanting faster access to the Internet than they can get with dial-up modems and wanting broadband telephone service bundled in may soon be pleased. AT&T has acquired Tele-Communications and the combination company will ally with Time Warner Communications to offer bundled services In New York City and other locales. Some multiple-system operators plan to put up their own IP telephony platforms, among them RCN. Cox Cable Communications has 1.8% of its customers as clients for fast Internet access. The cable TV operators association CableLabs, its PacketCable specifications and the entrenched Docsis standard are discussed as are European and other specifications/protocols/standards. Companies discussed include Cisco, Toshiba America Information Systems, Broadcom, At Home, Com21, Cabletron Systems, Thomson Consumer Electronics, Tollgrade Communications, Wavetek, 3Com, Motorola, Arris Interactive, Terayon Communications Systems, America Online and Compuserve.
